Another preview of what I'm working my a$$ of on. Pencils and inks both by yours truly. Sorry for the ugly watermark.

10 page preview/intro book will be self-published in August. If you are in the Toronto area, come to FanExpo2008 Aug 22-24 to say hi and pick up a copy. If not, let me know if you want one.

T_x I can see why you're dying of work. This is.. I can't help but say epic lol

But in all honesty, you're extremely great at backgrounds detail and composition overall.. and what I love most about your work is that I can learn so much just by looking at it.

i know my comments are brief, but im not a critic, just an admirer.

feel like a challenge ? - take part in my colour project
... In the last panel, why does it change from a round thing to a square thing?

Yes, I'm strange, being puzzled at that thing.... But I'd like to know.
what thing??

no it's not epic!!!

Thanks, but really, as comics go, I gotta step up my game and not be so lazy -- I tend to not fully ref backgrounds/environments before drawing and inevitably there's something that ends up looking "fake". When you do get them right, they take a ridiculous amount of time to render -- with inking this page, people/gremlin = 20-30 minutes, environment/background = 4+ hours T_T. The real trick is to (a) learn to do them fast (which means practicing drawing a lot of bg's), and/or (b) learn to draw panels/scenes that don't require a lot of bg.

Just curious, what can you learn just by looking at this??

Are you doing the inking digitally or by hand? I see you've added a lot more details in the first panel, such as the blinds and their clothes. Goodness gracious, you even got the draping curtain consistent on both panels! It looks really good like that. Do you plan to add any more shading touches to the bottom panel?
Digitally. I'm working up psychologically to use real ink. Probably the next project. Thanks, details make all the difference. Problem is keeping continuity from page to page -- this one's a bugger cause the whole 10 pages takes place in the bar, with scenes from all different angles. I know there are a ton of inconsistencies, but I'm hoping people don't notice ^^; If I were smart, I would have drawn panels that didn't have so much bg in them.

In terms of more shading, I started doing some, but I find it hard to do hatch work digitally and the results were pretty messy. So, I'm deciding to let the shadows etc. come out in the colouring (heehee...passing the buck!)

Oh mai... god... 4 hours?!? after it's already drawn... :dead:

What can I learn? Oh a ton of things! If I look closely, you make the lines bolder where the shadow side is. makes sense, as darker areas need more defined outlining than lighter. Next I learned that contrary to popular anime inking, pitch black areas like you used here result in a better and more defined lineart, it gives it more depth, and it makes it more striking. I also noticed your method of crosshatching can be used in many ways, from shadows to patterns (like on one of the character's plaid shirt and hat) To even inner highlights/underlights (like in the bottle on the counter in the bottom panel). It also does well for defining hairstyles better, so i learned that inking if executed properly, can finish a picture all by itself!

And more I can't explain. :3
