FF3, Bell sucks (take 2), and question...

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 26, 2008, 10:50 PM

Firefox 3...

is pretty damn good. I've always prefered Firefox over IE (mainly because I try to avoid MS as much as I can) and not easily wow'ed by most software updates (having developed software myself), but so far, I'm pretty impressed. Initially, I was bummed out cause a whole whack of my dA related extensions were disabled due to incompatibility, but I found updates for the ones I rely on most, so I'm happy.
The coolest feature of FF3 is when you scale text, graphics are scaled also, so that pages maintain their intended proportions. Even streamed video is scaled. This is great for those of us going blind from staring at a monitor all day!
I also found a really neat addon called PicLens that makes browsing devwatch quick and stylish. If I want to comment/fav, I have to exit PicLens and find the deviation, but it's not too big a hassle. We'll see if I keep using it in the long run, which will be the true test of the addon.

Bell Canada SUX times 2

My phone line went out again yesterday. That's twice in less than a week! DSL stayed up for some reason, but went dead also after half a day. Don't know why I'm writing about this... but long story short: the service tech on chat kept writing "You need not worry" in response to everything I typed and it really pissed me off! Probably the worst thing to say to someone already annoyed by sh*tty service.

Feeling Insecure..."

...about my art lately. Don't know why. Maybe it's from thinking about how much further I still have to go to make a living at drawing and/or in the comic industry. So I would really like to know from my peeps and fellow artists what you all like and dislike most about my artwork. Please be brutally honest.
Some of you guys are using words like "epic" and "awesome", which is really flattering (and always appreciated), but I just don't see or feel how that is so. A lot of times, I can't stand to look at my stuff. I tell others who say this that that is a good thing, a source of motivation to improve, but it's hard to listen to my own advice. I feel like I'm concentrating too much on technical execution and thus negatively affecting style. I dunno.

Sensei who? @.o

I'm not sure how it happened, but some regard me as sensei here on dA (you know who you are!) I don't feel terribly qualified. But in the same spirit that *ngoff gives me well thought-out crits and advice, I feel good "paying it forward" to the community. But really, we are all equal as artists here, don't you think? We can all learn something from each other.

Kung-fu Panda

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 20, 2008, 7:06 PM

:star::star::star::star::star:

Yeah, that's right! I rate Kung-fu Panda 5 stars! Anyone else see it? It's fun, funny, actiony, and oh so kung-fooey! Of course my opinion may be skewed, but being asian and having grown up with all manner of kung-fu folk lore, they did this one right. Not too cliche and not too corny. And the animation was just excellent! I particularly loved the opening sequence that was rendered in 2-D animation. Jack Black's voice acting was just perfect for the role. Makes me wanna do fan art....but I won't....cause I'm too busy!

Bell Canada sucks

So yesterday around noon, my internet goes dead (I'm on dsl.) I check my router and modem and find it's unable to acquire a PPPoE connection. So I pick up the phone to call them and say "what the frak" (yes, I watch and love battlestar galactica) and the phone is dead. Hmmmmm... So I figure it's a system issue, so I wait and check every hour. Finally I'm fed up, so I piggy back onto a neighbour's wifi network (I can't believe people still don't secure their networks, but thankfully so) and contact Bell's on-line chat support. The tech is nice, but isn't aware of any system problems. Hmmmm. He schedules a service call for today (which is pretty fast response as far as a utility goes -- okay, so they don't suck completely.) A nice service dude (who looked like Santa Claus) shows up today and within 2 hours, the phone is back up and running. Now this is the part that kills me. When he's done, he tells me that it appears to be a problem caused by another technician. One of my wires was punched into the wrong terminal block at the neighbourhood junction box. He says "the wire must have come loose while he was doing other service and then punched it back down on the wrong spot." In the end, it's fair to say, they suck and they don't -- just depends on who and what day. I'm just glad I have internet back.....damn, I had withdrawals!!!

BSG

Speaking of Battlestar Gallactica earlier. I went to look for the next eps today cause Friday is usually the air date. And it's not on. (Yes, I'm a dork and never check the schedule.) But now I find out that they won't be airing the second half of season 4 until next january.....NEXT JANUARY?!?!? WTF!! What am I gonna watch until then?!?!? *cries*

Sketchfest

Journal Entry: Sat Jun 7, 2008, 9:19 PM

Post Bread & Honey Report

For me, Chris and Brian (aka. the McHozer Collective), the Bread & Honey festival made up for the lousy free comic book day that we had a month ago.

From about 9:30am to 4:00pm, there was a constant stream of people wanting sketches and we literally drew non-stop. The temperature started out warm, but got stupid hot as the day wore on. Luckily Chris brought a giant patio umbrella -- we would have died without it -- plus the occasional breeze (which was down right windy at times) was nice. But really, I was too engrossed in drawing to notice any discomfort.

Brian did the superhero sketches (inked even) and I did portraits. I'm not sure how I became "the portrait artist" there, but once people saw what I was doing, that's all they wanted. I didn't know I had it in me to do life-like portraits, but one lady even tried to give me $10 after I drew her grand-daughter. Of course I refused, because we agreed at the outset that we would be doing the sketches for free.

But it was really worthwhile experience -- my first real exposure to being on the artist side of the table. Now I don't feel so nervous about being in the artist alley for FanExpo2008 coming up in August. And besides that, drawing people was great practice -- studying the features that uniquely define a face -- hopefully this will help me develop a deeper, broader well from which to draw upon (sorry, pun not intended. ^^' )

All in all, it was great fun! Now I understand why people say cons are so much fun.

Thanks for reading!

Bread & Honey this weekend

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 4, 2008, 7:42 AM

Bread & Honey Festival

I know most of my dear devwatchers who read my journals don't live in the greater Toronto area, but I thought I'd pimp this event anyway. (Plus it's a good excuse to update my journal so you don't think I'm dead or have otherwise become a hermit.)

The town of Streetsville (in the city of Mississauga just west of Toronto) holds a yearly summer-kick-off festival called the Bread and Honey, with a parade, and weekend-long events and carnival.

Because our free comic book day was badly rained out, the local comic book store Image Collections (on facebook) and our little group of artists decided to hold a mini-comic con on Saturday, June 7 coinciding with B&H. We'll be doing free sketches!

So, if you are interested and in the area, check out the links above and drop by to say hello!

eraser sh*t

Journal Entry: Tue May 27, 2008, 12:24 PM

I suck

Who hates eraser crap as much as I do? It gets everywhere and it's driving me nuts! All over my desk, in my keyboard, on the monitor, all over the floor, etched into the back of the art boards and worst of all, in my coffee!!!

Yeah, I suck.....I erase way too much! I guess the eraser sh*t is a good motivation for me to be more disciplined when pencilling, to not erase so much!

Anyway, sorry about the rant.

Anime North 2008

I went to AN2008 this past weekend. I felt so out of place. First, I ain't no spring chicken and second, all those kids in cosplay. Don't get me wrong, it was very interesting and amusing to see. Some of the cosplays were just incredible. Made me wish I was 18 again. Made me wish we had stuff/events like this when I was 18. *sigh* Plus, I thought I was over my school-boy shyness, but alas it felt weird to approach and talk to some dA'ers I saw in the artist alley.

Anyway, sorry about the emo rant.

Need a change

Journal Entry: Sun May 11, 2008, 9:00 PM

Journal

My journal css needs a change....got bored of spidey and the whole "black" theme (it is almost a year old.) So, nevermind me while I figure out what I want to change it to. In the mean time, I'm borrowing `ClaireJones' simple and clean css, which is always nice.

I'm so tired lately... my back gets fatigued and sore really easily these days (it's a long story.) Does anyone have suggestions to help me get my mojo back?

Free Comic Book Day

Journal Entry: Fri May 2, 2008, 11:49 PM
I'll be at Image Collections comic book store in Mississauga for free comic book day...(not that anyone would really care.) We're (I and the McHozers) are listed on the free comic book day site. I'm not sure what I'll be doing. I hope the weather holds up since the store is tiny and cramped and we'll probably be outside mostly -- but they're calling for rain on and off, so I won't hold my breath...

gah....I need sleep.

SAI, TommyH6, and Summer

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 23, 2008, 2:47 PM
It's been a while...

...since I updated here. I've been busy, but don't really know what I've done.... You know that feeling when there's hardly any time to do what you want, but then you don't really know where the time has gone or have really anything to show for it? I guess if I try hard I would see I've accomplished stuff that isn't the main stuff I want to get done, but that are in support of the main stuff. On top of that, I've been staying up late to cram more into a day and ending up all stupid tired. You can't cheat time.

Anyway, I don't have anything important to say, but I do want to comment/share a couple of thoughts. First on Easy Paint Tool SAI, secondly on Tommy Heavenly6, and lastly on how spring has crept up on me and how summer threatens to do the same.

Easy Paint Tool SAI

Wow, this program is awesome! I've only used it briefly but damn! I'm impressed. Two things stand out: the ease with which you can achieve great results and the vector tool is outstanding! I downloaded this program 2 weeks ago from the SAI website, started using a week ago, and spent a mere 3 days using it to do my Comistock contest entry. All the pen/brush tools worked exactly how I expected with no tinkering (although you can tinker with them), making it a pleasure to use.

But the most impressive feature of this program has to be the vector layer tools. Using freehand mode, it draws smooth, beautiful lines like a pen tool, but the amazing thing is you can then use the node edit tool and move, bend, distort, thicken, thin, and change the colour of vector and have an end result that still looks like a cleanly done hand drawn line. Once you're happy with it, you can convert or merge the layer down to a raster layer.

And if that doesn't impress you then the small size and responsiveness of the program will. Compared to the big boys Adobe and Corel, SAI is lightning fast. (When a draw a fast sweeping circle, SAI's smooth and rounded, Corel's is sometimes polygonal.)

If you want to try it, all the downloads are at http://systemax.jp/en/sai along with info on the program. Or go to the unofficial fan-run english version site at http://sai.detstwo.com/sai/

But if you're lazy and just want the necessary links and steps without wading through the website, I recommend you do this:
Because SAI is a japanese program and to save you the time/trouble of renaming the tool palette labels to english, download the unofficial fan-compiled english pack and the official PaintTool SAI (Full installation) (Ver.1.0.0, Zip Compressed, 2008-02-25, 2.1M)

There's no installer (which means less bloat!) so just unzip the first download (english pack) to a folder like C:\Program Files\Systemax\SAI (make sure you use the folder names and structure that's in the zip file.) Then open the second zip (official full version) and extract only sai.exe and sfl.dll to the same folder. Then run start-sai.exe and you're off and running. I think you only need to run start-sai.exe just once and then just run sai.exe there after (it seems works for me, but I could be wrong.)

I forgot to mention that a pressure sensitive input device is a must. If you got any questions, send me a note and I'll try my best to help ('cause the actual help files are in japanese!)

Tommy Heavenly6

I discovered Tommy Heavenly6 (aka. Kawase Tomoko) while listening to an online j-pop radio station a couple of weeks ago and I've been hooked ever since. I'm loving "lollipop candy BAD girl"!! If you like j-pop with a rock/metal influenced sound, go check it out. She's also the lead singer for A Brilliant Green

Long Journal

Still with me?.....this is getting stupid long. Don't blame you if you're nodding off.... not much longer I hope.

Spring/Summer

On top of gearing up for all the spring/summer comicons/animecons, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with things I want to do for the house too! I gotta prep the lawn (de-thatch, over-seed, fertilize) before it gets too hot. I also gotta re-grout the exterior of a bunch of windows and sand/paint peeling trim and stuff. I'm also refurbishing an drafting table I inherited so it'll fit in the space that I have. (Overly ambitious as I am, I'm trying to integrate a translucent/transparent window into it for light-table use.) I also want to update my journal css. And let's not forget all the drawing I still gotta/wanna do. Plus I wanna go out and enjoy the beautiful weather. Whaaaa!!! Shit, I'm just ranting.....I'll stop.

I'm gonna go thank every one for their faves and reply to comments and show some love back to you guys in the community....see ya.
