Ottawa Comic Con 2012-May-12,13

Mon May 7, 2012, 9:18 AM
It's already been a busy comic con season so far this year if you count FreeComicBookDay and other sketch events I've been doing.  Coming up this weekend, I'll be headed to Ottawa for a new convention by the same guys that organize the Montreal show.  If you're in the Ottawa area, come check it out.  Find me in artist alley at the Spent Pencils table (#716)

Convention website -> here
Floor plan -> here

You can read more about on my Spent Pencils website here:…

Bye for now!

  • Watching: Fringe
  • Drinking: McCafe
May 5, 2012.  Find a participating comic book store and get yourself some free comics!  Plus, many stores will have artists on hand doing sketches, and many for free.

I'll be at 2 different stores in Mississauga.  Click here to find out where I'll be sketching.

I haven't viewed any of your artwork in a long time.
I haven't fav'd or commented on your artwork for even longer.
I haven't properly thanked all your favs and comments in a long time either.
Bad Daniel, bad...

All right... enough self-deprecation.  Here's a quick life update:

My poor dog has been sick with hypercalcemia and has crystals/stones in her bladder.  Long story short, there's blood in her urine from the crystals irritating her bladder walls, she has to pee frequently and I have to keep her trapped in the kitchen (which she hates) to keep her from peeing in the house.  She cries whenever I leave her, which is heart-breaking (for all you pet owners out there, you know what I mean.)  So, I'm trapped in the kitchen also.  She's now on a special diet to to help dissolve the stones and antibiotics to keep infection at bay.   I hope it all works, because the alternative is surgery.

And damn, the vet bills are killer!

Update and Fan Expo 2011

Fri Aug 19, 2011, 1:39 PM
Holy crap, it's fan expo time again.  Where the heck has the year gone?

Sorry to everyone that I haven't been very active on dA this year.  I had a sudden increase in freelance work that's eaten up all my time.  Plus a lot of the work I have done can't be posted here.  As for the stuff I can post, you can chalk it up to exhaustion and laziness for the fact that I haven't uploaded.

So here's a quick short-listed run down of what I've been up to:

I did a project for Elections Canada/Elections Ontario -- I illustrated an educational package targeted to grade 5 and 10 curriculum.  It's called "Voting Rules!"  It was an exciting and fairly sizeable project...the "Democracy in Canada" poster alone took over a month to complete (long story, don't ask...)  At present, it seems is still retooling their website for this resource, so I'll update with a link later on.

I was also taking classes with Eisner Award winner Ty Templeton over at the Toronto Cartoonist's Workshop, which really rounded out and bumped up my comic drawing skills.  The "Comic Book Boot Camp" classes were simply awesome and highly recommended!  It still boggles my mind how much information he packed into those classes.  Anyway, stemming from that, I participated in the school's publication and drew a 7-page story in the anthology "Holmes Inc."  Proudly, I was chosen to lead off the book.  I'll upload some pages leading up to fan expo.

And speaking of Fan Expo, it's friggin' 4 days this year.  I'll be in Artist Alley at table A140 (close to the Ubisoft booth) with the Spent Pencils crew.  I'm busy redeveloping the website at the moment, so it looks like I won't have enough time to make a new print this year.

Hope to see you a the show.  And I'll try to update more often. See ya!

Just a quick update.  We didn't get into Fan Expo (the biggest comic/gaming/anime convention here in Toronto) this year because our application got sent in too late.  However, Arnold Trinidad and the rest of his Spent Pencils crew has invited me to sit with them on Sunday.

So, I'll be at their table in artist alley (table A177) for just that one day.

Wolverine Drawing Auction

Thu May 13, 2010, 12:17 PM
A while back, I donated a drawing of Wolverine to support the Joe Shuster Awards (Canadian equivalent of the Eisner comic awards.)  It is currently on auction:

(c)2009 Daniel Wong - Wolverine - donated to Joe Shuster Awards

I'll upload it larger if anyone wants a better look.

*rant warning*

To be honest, I didn't even know if my picture even made it to the people at JSA.  I had rushed to get it done and couriered to them for their deadline, which coincided with the awards ceremony last year.  But I was totally miffed and disappointed that my rushing was for naught, as it wasn't displayed at the ceremony and no one could tell me if they received it.  Here we are, donating our time and effort, and they wouldn't even give us the time of day.  They either lack professionalism or are just plain disorganized (I want to think they are the latter.)  Anyway, I'm just relieved now that they actually have it and are auctioning it.

Do I sound petty or out of line?  Please give me your opinion.

Here's hoping for good weather cause I'll be hangin' in the alley, literally!

Hi everyone!  I hope you're all doing great.  I haven't been on dA for a while and therefore haven't been viewing and commenting on your wonderful art, nor responding to favs, devwatches and your messages.  I'm sorry for that.  I miss you guys a lot.  Now that I'm done building the website I've been developing, hopefully I'll have more time to spend back here on dA.

Anyway, I have a couple of announcements, so here goes.

New Website!

Photobucket is what I've been working very hard on while I've been away and it has just been launched.  I would love for all of you to come and visit the site.

We have decided to refocus McHozer Comics' efforts toward publishing our comics on-line through the new site, and distribute print copies on demand in trade paperback format as material accumulates.  This means that you can read our comics as each page is produced and purchase a print copy when it comes out if you so choose.  With the site, we are also hoping to attract talent to join our ranks, so if you're interested in producing comics or even self-publishing, give me a shout.

beta-testers needed

With the new site, I'm looking for people to help beta-test.  It isn't a big task.  I just need people to let me know if they see something that isn't working properly or if they have suggestions to improve it.  The site is very much still a work in progress, so any help any of you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
If you are interested, please go to and register to our forum.  Then make a request to join the beta testers group at  After that, you'll be able to post your sagely advice (or flame my html/css/php coding skills) in the beta-testers forum.

(Btw, if anyone needs web-development help, send me a note or email.  I've gotten pretty proficient with the in's and out's of web-development.)

Wizard World Toronto Comicon

The con season has really crept up on us early this year with the addition of Wizard World Toronto.  It is this coming weekend, March 26-28.  Their site is  If you're planning to go, please drop by and say hi!  If you let me know by commenting here, I'll make sure to look for you.

Everything else

Man, nothing for months and now this wall of text.... I apologize.
Anyway, commissions are still open, and I'm still taking requests for free sketches.

Bye for now.  Thanks for reading and for all the support you guys give me!

Free sketches...

Mon Mar 15, 2010, 4:53 PM
Hi y'all!

I've been so busy designing my website that I haven't been on dA much, nor had time to really draw.  So, what better way to get back in the game than to offer up free sketches!  So I'm going to take your requests.  I you want one, please leave a comment with a reasonably detailed description and if need be, links to a ref or two.  If by chance I get too many requests, then selection will be done on a random basis (or basically whichever comment I read first when I next sign on.)

Happy daylight savings time!

  • Listening to: Nirgilis
  • Drinking: coffee

What the?!?!?....

Sun Feb 7, 2010, 8:43 PM
So here I just sign on to check my messages.  Yeah, there are a lot since I have been neglecting dA  lately.  Then I'm all "hmmm, strange...why the sudden flood of comments on Itsy-Bitsy-Biggie-Spider?"  Then I'm reading through them and one says "...definitely DD worthy..." and I'm thinking "what the heck does that mean?" (cause I'm dense that way.)

Anyhow, long story short, I have to thank ShouYume for all the attention it has gotten.  Sy, you're too sweet for suggesting it for DD consideration!  And thank you to Majnouna for featuring it on Friday.  Who knew such a simple comic that I drew for my little girl would end up being enjoyed by so many.

Thank you everyone who fav'd and commented.  I'm very touched.  I'm slowly working through replying and thanking everyone personally.

<dd>wynnter89's official contest journal link:

A while back, wynnter89 wrote a journal musing whether drawings of female characters are esthetically more pleasing than male characters, and whether female characters are just plain better to draw.

Anyhow, that journal and discussion evolved from a comparison of illustrations of male/female character counterparts, to an idea for this contest.  Read on to find out how to enter!

After recently discussing male and female forms we have devised an interesting competition.  You will have to choose an actual or traditional male character and convert them, their clothes, their style (maybe even their sidekicks/friends/parents) into a female form.

Batman and Robin suddenly become Batwoman and Roberta

Start date - 1st October 2009
Cutoff date - 25th January 2010

We will be allowing for one extra day unofficially for the time zone difference - but don't bank on that, have your entries in before then!

We are very open to any media you want to use so there are no restrictions.

Please have your entry submitted by the date specified above in one of the following ways:
:bulletblue: By Note
<dd>Send a note to wynnter89 or Oshouki with the subject "comp entry", and with a link to your dA deviation.

<dt>:bulletblue: By Comment
<dd>Leave a comment at the bottom of this journal with a link to your dA deviation.

Since this is a dA contest, we require your entry to be submitted as a dA deviation.

Entries will be rated and scored on the following 5 attributes:
:bulletblue: Uniqueness /10
<dd>try not to do people that have already been done like superman / supergirl

<dt>:bulletblue: Costume Design/Relevance /10
<dd>the costume will be an integral part of the piece, nudity is allowed but some indication to who they are will be necessary

<dt>:bulletblue: Transfer Effect to Female /10
<dd>how well you have made the character look like the original but female

<dt>:bulletblue: Artistic Execution /10
<dd>how well you have rendered it -- if drawn, how skillfully you drew it, if photography/cosplay, how well you have put together the costume and how well you photographed it, basically, skill and effort

<dt>:bulletblue: Overall Design /10

This score will then be averaged out to a final mark out of 10.

After we have determined the top entries through scoring them, they will be announced in a journal and placed in a public poll.  The control will then be turned over to the public to judge the final rankings.

Some Idea Suggestions

Skeleton Jack
Santa Claus
Splinter (TMNT)
Samurai Jack
or any popular character you can think of.

This list will evolve over the comp's duration.  Donations are very welcome as we wish this competition to be big.
:bulletblue: 1st place:
<dd>3 months sub from wynnter89
<dd>3 months sub from Oshouki
<dd>1 month sub from soldierofsolace
<dd>8 x 10 print from Gismonda999

<dt>:bulletblue: 2nd place:
<dd>1 month sub from wynnter89
<dd>1 month sub from Oshouki

Extra Stuff

We will publish each entry in our journals, and after the cut off date, your final scores.

Both wynnter89 and I will also submit female versions of known characters during the comp, but only as examples.
